What's a party without a cake?  It's become a tradition; celebrations of any type need a cake!  If you're planning a baby shower for a friend, family member or co-worker, you'll need some cake ideas for baby showers.

.........First you'll need to decide if you want to make your own cake or order a special bakery baby cake. Many bakeries specialize in "occasion cakes" such as wedding, anniversary and baby shower cakes. 

If you decide to order a bakery baby cake, be ready to take the "particulars" to the shop with you; what flavor do you prefer; white/vanilla, chocolate, yellow, or pink/cherry?  Considering how many guests you're expecting, how large do you want the cake?  A flat-sheet bakery baby cake or a double-tired cake? 

And, of course, there's the frosting.   Butter-cream or whipped silk?  What color?  How about frosting decorations?  A good bakery will have a portfolio of cake ideas for baby showers.

Homemade Cake Idea for a Baby Shower

Here's a perfect solution if you want to add a homemade touch to your baby shower with cupcakes!  This recipe makes BABY  CAKES PHOTOabout 28 baby shower cakes.

 Ingredients:

baby cake graphic 8 oz cornstarch
baby cake graphic 4 oz superfine sugar
baby cake graphic 6 oz butter, softened
baby cake graphic 2 eggs at room temperature
baby cake graphic 1 teaspoon baking powder
baby cake graphic 1 tablespoon milk
baby cake graphic ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
baby cake graphic Pink food coloring
baby cake graphic Blue food coloring

You'll also need a muffin pan lined with paper baking cups.

Instructions: 

baby cakes graphic Begin by putting the butter and sugar in a large bowl, then beat together until smooth and fluffy.
baby cakes graphic Add one egg at a time, beating well after adding each egg. 
baby cakes graphic Add milk and cornstarch and beat for ten minutes. 
baby cakes graphic Add the baking powder and vanilla; mix well.
baby cakes graphic Put half the mixture into another bowl. 
baby cakes graphic Add pink coloring to one bowl, and blue coloring to the other bowl. 
baby cakes graphic Add one large teaspoon of each colored cake mixture to each paper baking cup. 
baby cakes graphic Lightly sugar each cake and bake 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees.

Finishing Touches on this Cake Idea for Baby Showers

If the gender of the expectant child is known, you can make all the cakes either pink or blue. 

If you order a bakery baby cake, you'll need to decide on the baby shower cake's wording.  There are many possibilities:  "Wonderful News!"  "Welcome---" (if child's name has been chosen). 
If the parents are expecting twins, "Double Trouble!" is a favorite.
