"Talking About Baby Talk"

It is big fun to watch a baby develop the ability to talk.  The first word is cause for celebation.  By listening to others, baby learns what words sound like and how to put a sentence together. Here is how a baby's speech will develop...

Baby at 0-3 Months

Becomes startled at loud noises.
Is soothed by calm, gentle voices.
Likes to cuddle and enjoys being held.
Cries, gurgles, grunts and says "ah."
Has strong muscles in cheeks and tongue.

Baby at 4-6 Months

Watches your face with interest when you talk.
Tries to "talk" with you.
Smiles at you.
Coos and squeals for attention.
Has a special cry when hungry.

Baby at 6-8 Months

Understands some common words when used with gestures.
Tries to say sounds and words like: "ba-ba" and "na-na."
Tries to sing along with radio or TV.
Laughs and may imitate a cough.

Baby at 12-18 months

At his first birthday, your child will likely use one to five words meaningfully. By 14 months, that working vocabulary may grow to seven real words, though he may have up to 20 "words" that only he and someone close to him can understand.

Don't worry if he struggles to get his meaning across. A little frustration is actually a healthy sign that he's trying hard to communicate and cares whether or not you understand him.

Baby at 19-24 months

Now understands as many as 200 words, though he/she willprobably use only 50 to 75 of them regularly. Many of these words will be nouns that designate objects in the baby's daily life, such as "spoon" and "car."

Toddler at 25-30 months

A larger vocabulary allows your toddler to begin to experiment with modulation. For a while he may yell when he means to speak normally and whisper softly when answering a question, but he'll find the appropriate volume soon enough.
